Our first guest at 6 p.m. on Let’s Talk Sports, live on Instgram @nation246 is hurdler Shane Brathwaite.
Shane Brathwaite has represented Barbados’ with distinction in athletics and has a record of winning in his wake.
At just 17 years old, he became Barbados’ first World Champion, winning the octathlon in 2007 at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, with a new personal best record of 6 261 points.
When he became a professional athlete, he opted to do just one event, the 110 metres hurdles.
And he shone there as well.
Brathwaite, 30, is Barbados’ first Pan Am Games gold medallist winning in 13.31 seconds last year in Peru. He won the 110 metres hurdles gold at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships in 2013 and the CAC Games in 2018.
He was third at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships (NACAC) Championships in 2018. He also has a gold medal at the 2012 NACAC Under-23 Championships.
The former student of then St James Secondary and Texas Tech University also competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games. He fell in the opening round and is looking forward to improving on that after missing out in 2016. He led Team Barbados at the 2019 IAAF World Championships, placing sixth in the final in Doha.
Brathwaite has also represented Barbados with distinction in the 4×100 metres relay.
He believes he is about to peak and is looking forward to the Olympic Games in Japan.
“My main goal is to be on the podium for the Olympics, but at least if I make an Olympic final, I would be satisfied with that for my career,” he said last year after winning the Barbados Olympic Association’s Athlete of the Year.
He counts the Nation Sports Council’s National Sports Personality Award among his many accolades. (SAT/EZS)
