Committee gets creative

The St Lucy Parish Independence Committee (PIC) has found a way for Barbadians to express their fears, anxieties, and concerns about the novel coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic.

Feelings on COVID-19: Expressed through Art, Chairperson Olivia Sobers said was the committee’s project coordinator Janice Springer’s idea. And while initially it was opened to residents of St Lucy only, following the interest and response from people across Barbados, they opened it up and extended the deadline to June 25.

“We were thinking of different ways to reach our community because everything was on pause. The [community independence] programme was on pause, but we didn’t have any official letter or statement stating such. As PICs we were thinking of creative ways of how to get the community involved in how they are relating to COVID-19 and the effects of the virus on the economy, families, relationships, jobs,” Sobers said in a telephone interview.

People of all ages are free to express their feeling on the global pandemic in 300 to 500-word short stories, poems, comic strips, art/drawings, songs, dramatic pieces, or food until June 25. Entries should be emailed to the expressionsucy@gmail.com. (GMB)
