BWA: More rainfall needed

The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) said today that the “sporadic showers” over the past few days were not enough to have a significant impact on water levels.

BWA said in a statement that the showers had “sparked questions as to the linkage between this rainfall and a lack of a pipe-borne supply in some areas”.

Charles Leslie, BWA’s Director of Engineering said “consistent rainfall for longer durations is necessary to positively impact increased water levels in the groundwater aquifers”.

“Recent showers of short duration have only been enough to satisfy the demand of the plants and shrubbery at the ground surface and very little of that water has been percolating down to the aquifers,” Leslie explained.

BWA reminded customers that even though the Hurricane Season has officially started and there may be some showers, the island is still feeling the effects of a prolonged drought.

“You are reminded that you must store water to assist yourself and your family on an ongoing basis and particularly at this time. As usual, we reiterate five gallons per person, per day, per household for a minimum of five days or as much as your household requires. (PR)
