US$28m boost for mains project

Government has received a US$28 million boost in its long-standing fight to provide continuous water supply to water-scarce communities.

The financial assistance comes in the form of a loan from the Latin American Development Bank (CAF) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), which will go towards replacement of water mains and the rehabilitation of the pumping station at Bowmanston.

Delivering the featured remarks at a ceremony to mark the occasion at the Bowmanston facility on June 19, Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams said the project forms part of a master plan that would bring relief to 82 000 Barbadians.

“Under the pre-investment component, the development of a master plan will facilitate the Government of Barbados in the provision of a road map to determine the sustainability of the water and sanitation sectors, which will take the changing climate conditions into account,” he said. (CLM)
