Captain Jason Holder produced career-best figures of six for 42 as West Indies ended the second day of the opening Test against England at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, on top.

Holder took three wickets for one run in 14 balls, including that of his opposite number Ben Stokes, who top-scored for England with 43. His previous best was six for 59 versus Bangladesh in 2018.

He was supported by Shannon Gabriel’s four for 62 as the hosts were dismissed for 204 before tea in 67.3 overs.

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler added 35.

In reply, the West Indies reached 57 for one before bad light brought an end to proceedings for the second consecutive day.

They lost the wicket of opener John Campbell who was leg before wicket for 28 off the bowling of England’s leading wicket-taker, James Anderson, after two decisions were overturned.

Tomorrow, Kraigg Brathwaite, 20, and Shai Hope, 3, will return to the crease as the Windies trail by 147 runs with nine wickets remaining. (AGB)
