UWI ready for face-to-face teaching

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is ready for face-to-face teaching after disruption due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This was revealed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles during a webinar on Friday to celebrate the UWI achieving global recognition in the universities’ rankings.

He said UWI had taken the scientific advice, of which it was at the centre, for the return of all of its students along with international students who wanted to enrol.

In terms of the latest acclamation, Sir Hilary said: “We have done our best to honour the legacy of our stalwarts and three years ago we entered our university into the Global Ranking Competitions within the context of the Times Higher Education. Our results were good: first in the Caribbean, top three per cent in Latin America, top four per cent of the world’s finest. But two weeks ago those results from the Times were once again declared and our results have been excellent. UWI has risen to the top.

“We remain the top university in the Caribbean and now we are ranked in the top one per cent of the best universities in Latin America from a field of over 5 000.”

He also said UWI was ranked in the top one per cent of universities “in our age cohort, universities within the Golden Age period of 50 to 100 years. This is indeed a triple first. Excellence achieved”.

He added the distinction was built on a foundation laid by the stalwarts, the work of project leader Pro Vice-Chancellor Densil Williams, the support of students and regional governments.

The webinar also heard from the guild presidents, principals of the five UWI campuses across the region and other stakeholders.

Principal of Cave Hill, Professor The Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau, said the acclaim validated the work of UWI and underscored its resilience “in the most challenging times”.

She said while older global universities had their doors closed because of COVID-19, Cave Hill was open for business and learning. (JS)
