Man charged with threatening to kill GECOM chairman

Georgetown – A 27-year-old man appeared in a Magistrate Court on Monday charged with threatening to kill the chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), retired justice Claudette Singh.

Ryan Williams, appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge, which the prosecution alleged took place on July 14, when he used his Facebook account to issue the threat.

He was charged under the Cybercrime Act for using a computer system to coerce, harass, intimidate, humiliate, among other objectives. He also faces a charge of threatening Singh and using violence towards her and members of her family.

In the matter, which was heard virtually, Williams was placed on GUY$500 000 bail and will return to court on August 3.

Under the Cybercrime Act, a person who commits an offence is liable on summary conviction to a fine of GUY$5 million and imprisonment for three years. (CMC)
