Port of Spain – Health authorities Friday confirmed that an “elderly female” had become the latest victim of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pushing the death toll to nine.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said that it wanted to “regrettably” inform the nation of the death and that it is hoped “that the patient confidentiality would be respected and that the family would be allowed to mourn in peace”.

It said that the woman had pre-existing medical conditions and that the public release of the information regarding her death “was delayed until the family was informed and had ample time to process the information”.

The Ministry of Health said that reports that there were five COVID-19 related deaths at the Cuara Hospital “are false”, and urged the public to “source and share COVID-19 related information from official sources only”.

The ministry said that the number of positive cases here now stand at 412, with 265 being active cases. (CMC)
