Defence attorney Lalu Hanuman is calling for prisoners on remand, who don’t pose an immediate threat, to be released with electronic tagging.
He was speaking on the steps of the Supreme Court Tuesday after his client, Lionel DaCosta Wilson, 37, was acquitted of raping a woman 40 years his senior on August 13, 2016.
He was found not guilty by majority verdict in the No. 2 Supreme Court before Justice Pamela Beckles.
“What we should be having in Barbados is the same type of bracelet system they’re talking about introducing for tourists who are coming into the island to ensure they don’t break quarantine. People who are facing a charge, as long as they are not posing any threat to the public, should be let out from prison with a bracelet on their ankle. They do this in other countries, in Britain, for example,” he said. (RA)
