Still no closure for mum after a year

For more than a year Yvette Maynard has jumped at every strange sound, wondering if her son, 31-year-old Ricardo Athelston Maynard, was finally coming home.

He has been missing for more than a year.

Yvette is torn up. Logically she does not feel he is still alive, yet is unable to keep down the spark of hope keeping her from thinking, “What if?”

The mother, of Breezy Hill, Halton, St Philip, said the last thing she had heard about her son was his identification card had been found among some human remains, but up to now they had not received a concrete word on his fate.

“Some detectives came in May or June this year and said they were taking over the case, but that is all we know. I want some closure; if that is my child’s remains, I need to know so I can bury him. If anyone knows anything, please come forward and help the police,” she pleaded.

Maynard said the last time she saw her son was on September 29 last year and spoke to him the day after. She said there was nothing untoward about the conversation to alert her to anything being wrong, but as time passed with no word, she feared the worst.

“My belief is somebody hurt my child because if he could pick up a phone, he would have called me or his family,” she said.

To make matters worse, Maynard only had a short time to be with her son before he went missing as he was returned home after serving some time in prison six weeks prior. She said, while her son had made some mistakes, he was still a good person at heart.

“Ricky was a loving, helpful, bubbly person. His nickname was ‘Smiley’ because he liked to smile and he liked to help people. He went a wrong road but there is good in everybody,” she said.

Maynard said she did not sleep well and her life was a “living nightmare” as more time passed without closure.

The missing person’s report in October last year said Ricardo was wearing a short-sleeved solid navy blue, buttoned-down shirt, a plain grey long pants and a pair of mustard and cream-coloured soft shoes.

It said he was about five feet, six inches tall with black short hair, dark complexion and walks with an erect appearance.

He was described as having brown eyes and a flat forehead, with small eyes, a small nose, normal mouth, thick lips, a short neck, bushy eyebrows and is clean-shaven. He also has a tattoo on the left arm, right bicep and chest.

Maynard was known to frequent the areas of Colleton, St George, and Nelson Street, The City. Anyone with information on his whereabouts can call police emergency 211, District ‘C’ Police Station at 416-8200, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477). (CA)
