BWU Gladiola beat Wanderers by 36 runs in a thrilling Barbados Cricket Association Twenty20 Elite/Division 1 Cup final yesterday at Kensington Oval.

Batting first, Gladiola smashed 57 runs in the Powerplay en route to a total of 172 for five off their 20 overs.

Wanderers huffed and puffed but eventually had their flame blown out at 136 for seven off 20 overs.

A large and colourful crowd, most of them wearing the blue and green of Gladiola and chanting the “Whipping Boyz” slogan, celebrated the capture of their first title.

Gladiola’s innings was set up by middle order batsman Renaldo Brathwaite, who played several brave shots in his 51 off 40 balls with three sixes. It was his third half-century in five matches and earned him the Man Of The Match award.

He marked the landmark with a raised bat and salute to the supporters in the 3Ws Stand. (HE)
