St Lucy lost one of its promising young men yesterday in tragic circumstances.
Yohance Johnson, 21, was in a vehicle travelling along Lamberts, St Lucy, during heavy rainfall. While traversing a bridge, the driver of the vehicle, whose name could not be ascertained up to press time, lost control and the car fell into a ravine.
Johnson’s body was retrieved around 4 p.m. from a gully in Date Tree Hill, St Peter, a mile away from the vehicle by officials from the Barbados Fire Service, with assistance of residents.
It is suspected that floodwaters contributed to the driver’s difficulties. The injured driver was taken to Sandy Crest Medical Facility in Sunset Crest, St James.
Police said a caller reported that a vehicle had been washed into a gully at Lamberts around 1:40 p.m.
When a Sunday Sun team arrived in the area where Johnson’s body was found, residents were in groups watching emergency personnel work.
Alex Rollock, who was conversing with friends at the village shop, said he helped firefighters search for Johnson’s body. (SB)
