Lawrence T. Gay parents want answers
Parents of children attending the Lawrence T Gay Memorial Primary School staged yet another protest at that institution on Tuesday morning, saying they were in the dark about the environmental issues impacting the school.
Holding placards at the gate, parents again called on the Santia Bradshaw-led Ministry of Education to update them on timelines for the fixes to the longstanding environmental challenges, which were blamed for illness among the student body and staff.
The school is located at Spooner’s Hill, St Michael, and due to ongoing environmental problems, children are taking classes at various locations.
President of the Parent Teacher Association, Stephanie Williams, said she was concerned that the matter was not being treated with the urgency it deserved, despite the toll that this most recent closure had on students and parents.
“We have been experiencing environmental issues here last year and prior to that. Teachers and students have been sick and as parents we are now feeling sick and overwhelmed with the situation at the school,” Williams said.
“This morning, we are here because it is not good enough that school was closed last Thursday because work was supposed to be done, but yet there has been no official word from the Ministry of Education, but we have to rely on messages from the teachers and this is not good enough. This morning we had a student turn up for school because his parents were not aware of the closure,” she said. (CLM)
