A lot has been done to assist the disabled community, says public relations officer at the Barbados Council for the Disabled Christopher Gilkes, but challenges remain.

He was speaking yesterday after a presentation of colouring books at Arthur Smith Primary School in St Matthias, Christ Church, where he thanked the Government for the recent purchase of Transport Board buses which can comfortably accommodate people using wheelchairs.

Gilkes, however, said unemployment and access were still among their major issues.

“We can now move around freely and feel independent, so I have to thank Government for that. But we have further to go in terms of accessibility, because there is a greater need for ramps and slopes in Bridgetown or in business establishments. (TG)
