A small craft advisory has been issued for above normal swell heights.

Barbados Meteorological Services said on Friday this alert message is valid from 6 p.m. on Saturday.

A small-craft advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3 metres (8 to 10 feet) are affecting or forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

An eastern Atlantic high-pressure system is expected to generate strong surface winds which are forecast to cause a deterioration in sea swells. As a result, moderate to rough swells with heights ranging from 2 to 3 metres ( 7 to 10 ft ) are expected to begin affecting the marine area from Saturday, according to the Met Office.

All marine craft operators and beachgoers should note the following possibilities along the coast and nearshore: large, open water swells can be hazardous to some vessels and operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times due to large swells.

The Met Office said this message will be updated at 6 a.m. on Monday, January, 11. For more information, please visit: https://www.barbadosweather.org/marineBarResp.php or the social media pages of Barbados Meteorological Services. (PR)
