NCC: Beware of Portuguese man-of-war
Beach goers got a shock this morning when they discovered a number of Portuguese man-of-war lining the shore between the Tiki Bar and the end of the Richard Haynes Boardwalk, Hastings, Christ Church.
Regular beach goer Nicholas Deane buried 15 of the dangerous sea creatures, and made a post on his Facebook page.
The National Conservation Commission issued an advisory, to refrain from entering the waters on the South Coast.
“Entering the waters in this area will expose you to the possibility of being stung by the Portuguese man-of-war . . . . If you are stung, remove the stinging tentacles by rinsing with copious amounts of sea water. Do not rub the area with sand. Use heat or cold for pain management. If you experience any breathing difficulty immediately seek medical attention,” the advisory read. (RA)
