COOLIDGE – Jonathan Carter gathered his third List A hundred and Barbados Pride will try to defend 266 to win the minor playoff against Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the West Indies Super50 Cup.
Carter cracked an even 100 from 121 balls that included eight fours and two sixes and West Indies One-day International wicketkeeper/batsman Shai Hope made 85 to lead the way for Pride in the playoff for fifth and sixth at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua.
The pair shared 124 for the third wicket to set the foundation for a Pride total of 265 for seven from their allocation of 50 overs, after they chose to bat.
Pride lost the scalps of Justin Greaves for seven and Kyle Hope, Shai’s elder brother, for nine either side of a 40-minute break for rain that stopped play with the Barbadian franchise on 51 for one.
Pride were 53 for two in the 15th over, when Carter came together with the younger Hope to build a platform for their side.
Hope reached his 50 from 69 balls, when he drove left-arm spinner Ashmeade Nedd to long-on for a single in the 23rd over.
He remained to usher Carter to his 50 from 67 balls, when the left-hander steered part-time pacer Devon Thomas to third man for two in the 33rd over.
Carter was, however, fortunate on 57 that off-spinner Kofi James dropped a return chance from a miscued drive three overs later.
Hope was not that blessed and was caught at deep mid-wicket off pacer Quinton Boatswain for 85 from a miscued flick in the 39th over, missing out on his 13th List A hundred.
Carter persevered and endured a nervous spell on 99 before he reached his milestone from 119 balls, glancing West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph to deep fine leg for a single in the 47th over.
Carter was, however, one of three wickets that fell inside the final three overs and Pride once again failed to capitalise on the platform set by their top-order batting.
Summarised scores:
Pride 265 for seven off 50 overs (Jonathan Carter 100, Shai Hope 85, Roston Chase 21, Jason Holder 21; Alzarri Joseph 3-44, Quinton Boatswain 3-68) vs Hurricanes.
