ST JOHN’S – In a widely expected move, Cricket West Indies has retained Kraigg Brathwaite and removed fellow Wanderers and Barbados Pride teammate Jason Holder from the post of West Indies Test captain for the international home series against Sri Lanka.
Holder, the youngest player to hold the position at the age of 23, led Windies in 37 Tests – the fifth highest – for the Caribbean side behind Clive Lloyd (74), Sir Vivian Richards (50), Brian Lara (47) and Sir Garfield Sobers (39).
“We all believe that Kraigg is the right man to lead our Test side at this point in time and I’m delighted that he has accepted the role,” chairman of the West Indies selection panel, Roger Harper said in a media release.
“In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, Kraigg was able to motivate his players to play to a very high level and create the culture we are looking to establish where the team showed a collective determination to fight and a real hunger for success.”
Under Holder’s leadership over the past six years, West Indies won 11 matches – including a memorable 2-1 home series victory over England three years ago – and lost 21. (AR)
