MP: Probe GIS boys too!

Don’t just probe the goings-on at the girls’ section of the Government Industrial School (GIS), but also look into the boys’ unit.

That was the impassioned plea yesterday from Government backbencher Dr Sonia Browne, who is calling for an investigation into the facility at Dodds, St Philip.

She was speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday during the Estimates Debate, in the wake of the raging controversy over a 14-year-old girl who was placed naked in solitary confinement and the subsequent action taken – including replacing the entire GIS board – regarding the female unit at Barrows, St Lucy.

Last Saturday, Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams publicly apologised to the girl’s mother and grandmother and also announced that the practice of solitary confinement at GIS would be immediately abandoned. (GBM)
