Some thought it was an April Fool’s joke, albeit one day late.

But actor Regé-Jean Page and the official Bridgerton Netflix page confirmed he would not be returning to the hit series to reprise his role as the Duke of Hastings.

Page, who has both British and Zimbabwean heritage, rode into the hearts and homes of millions as the dashing Duke when the show, The Duke and I – based on the first of a series of novels by Julia Quinn – aired on Christmas Day last year.

The announcement came via a notice from Lady Whistledown, the font of all knowledge, who publishes a gossip rag on the British Ton of the day.

“Dearest Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the announcement said.

“We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family,” it continued. “Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”

On his Instagram page, the actor also posted a note of farewell.

“The ride of a lifetime.

It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be your Duke. Joining this family – not just on screen, but off screen too. Our incredibly creative and generous cast, crew, outstanding fans –it’s all been beyond anything I could have imagined. The love is real and will just keep growing,” Page said.

Fans reacted with horror, some begging him to return, others saying he was the reason they watched the eight-episode series.

While others wished him best of luck on his acting journey, some fans said with his departure they would no longer be watching the series which is scheduled to continue with the Viscount Who Loved Me.

Page later revealed he was contracted for the lone season. (SAT)
