PRESIDENT OF THE National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Akanni McDowall, is refuting allegations by councilor Michelle Cave that he unilaterally called a date for the union’s elections in July.
McDowall told the Saturday Sun it was set in accordance with the union’s constitution.
“(Rule 16 (1) states that elections shall be held on the day appointed by the national council and the date for elections was chosen by the council on March 12 on a motion which was seconded by sister [Michelle] Cave,” he said.
However, on Monday, Cave, who intends to run for vice-president, and is part of a group seeking a no-confidence motion against McDowall, charged that the president strayed from the union’s customary election process.
