Outraged at the news that food prices will soon be going up in supermarkets, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is calling for an urgent meeting with the Social Partnership to discuss this matter.
In addition, the largest trade union body in Barbados said it will be establishing a consumer protection body within the NUPW to act in the best interest of all public servants and workers in the wider Barbados.
“We will very vigorously monitor prices and seek out the best deals for all of our members. It will be the mandate of this new body to protect our workers financial interests, as for too long they have been taken advantage of in this country by large commercial interests,” the NUPW said in a statement to this newspaper yesterday.
President Akanni McDowall, said the union was prepared to “flex its muscles” on behalf of workers if there was any indication that they were being taken advantage of in this situation. (MB)
