Matthew Wright has pulled out of the qualifying campaign for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
The Barbadian triathlete says it is the wrong time to aim to meet the requirements for the biggest sporting event set for July 23 to August 8 with only six weeks remaining in the qualifying period.
Wright, who is based in Cardiff, Wales, confirmed the news to NATION SPORT yesterday during an exclusive telephone interview.
“I decided not to chase Tokyo 2020 qualification anymore this year, with triathlon it would be impossible for me to qualify now. I needed to get points over 12 races within the two years and basically I needed another four to six races and with COVID-19, it was only a six-week window available and there were only five races available in three different continents,” he said.
