It appears as if more women and children are becoming the recipients of the food distributed by a local charity.
Head of the Fishers of Men Charity Sharon Bellamy-Thompson made that observation on Sunday morning at Jubliee Gardens in Bridgetown, St Michael, where she teamed up with the Kiwanis Club.
“Since COVID-19 and the ashfall, we have been seeing a lot of people, mainly women coming and some of them are coming with their kids. A lot of them come from homes where the parents don’t want them there.
“I have also seen a lot of deportees who went to America when they were young but when they came back there was nowhere for them to go so they had to live on the street,” Bellamy-Thompson said.
She said she was working with the private sector and was hoping to find a more long-lasting and comprehensive housing solution.
During the session today, which began around 8 a.m., the organisations distributed about 110 packages containing food and drinks.
The lieutenant governor of Kiwanis’ Division 27 of Eastern Canada and the Caribbean International Cynthia Blackman said they were pleased to assist.
“Kiwanis is about helping those in need and therefore when the Kiwanis Club of Benevolence was organised in 2020, the first thing we thought to do was give to this initiative because we know Sharon has been doing this for years.
“So this is something we are going to be doing on a monthly basis, and as long as there is a need,” Blackman said. (TG)
