An elderly woman from the United Kingdom reportedly drowned near the Paynes Bay Fish Market, Paynes Bay, St James today.

The woman reportedly lived between the United Kingdom and Barbados.

Neighbour, Joanna McNaghten, said she knew the deceased only as “Lisa” and said she was in her mid-70s.

“Around 1 p.m. I went to look for her but she was not home, so I came to the beach thinking she might be there,” she said.

McNaghten said she then saw Lisa floating in the water and called the police. McNaghten said workers in the market reported that they had seen Lisa enter the sea 20 minutes earlier.

The body was retrieved by officers of the Barbados Coast Guard.

In a final act of kindness, McNaghten covered Lisa’s body with a sheet. (CA)
