Gros Islet – Roston Chase hit a half-century, but it was never going to be nearly enough, and West Indies crashed to an innings and 63 runs defeat against South Africa in the first Test in St. Lucia.

Chase hit the top score of 62, but pacer Kagiso Rabada and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj shared the last five of the last six wickets, and the Windies were bowled out for 162 in their second innings before lunch on the third day at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.

Chase struck seven fours and one from 156 balls in close to three hours at the crease, but none of the other batsmen in the Caribbean side showed anything close to that kind of defiance and none reached the high-water mark of 20.

The West Indies innings came to a close about 35 minutes past the scheduled lunch interval, when Jayden Seales edged a loose drive and was caught at third slip off Anrich Nortje for three.

Rabada ended with five for 34 from 20 overs, Nortje finished with three for 46 from 14 overs and Maharaj snared two for 23 from 11 overs.

The result gave the South Africans a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series for the Vivian Richards Trophy, which will remain in the possession of the visitors, no matter the outcome of the second Test that starts this coming Friday at the same venue.

“I thought South Africa batted well,” Brathwaite said, when asked about the difference between the two teams. “Our first innings, we did not get a big enough total, so we were always on the back-foot.”

On his side’s decision to bat first in the Test in the face of bowler friendly conditions: “Yes, I would think I would have done the same thing. As we saw (on Saturday), there was invariable bounce and I always thought it was a little bit dry.”

He added: “Obviously, we did not bat well in the first innings, so we were always under pressure from the start. We just did not bat as well as we could and we just have to bat better in the second Test, it’s as simple as that.”

West Indies suffered an early setback, when their vice-captain Jermaine Blackwood was caught at short extra cover for 13, essaying a loose drive in the seventh over of the morning.

A period of resistance ended, when Jason Holder was bowled for four by Maharaj, offering no stroke to an arm-ball, soon after Chase reached his 50 from 122 balls, when he drove Wiaan Mulder through mid-off for a second successive four and the last of his innings.

Chase swung Maharaj over mid-wicket for six in a show of force, but the spinner got his own back, when the Windies batsman tried to cut an arm-ball and was bowled off the inside edge.

Rahkeem Cornwall was caught at mid-off for a four-ball duck in the next over off Rabada, playing an ill-advised drive, and Joshua da Silva was comprehensively beaten and bowled by Rabada for nine, offering no stroke to a ball moving back.

South Africa wicketkeeper/batsman Quinton de Kock was named Player-of-the-Match for his innings of 141 not out in the first innings of the visitors.

Summarised scores:

West Indies 97 (Jason Holder 20, Kraigg Brathwaite 15, Shai Hope 15, Rahkeem Cornwall 13, Nkrumah Bonner 10; Lungi Ngidi 13.5-7-19-5, Anrich Nortje 4-35) and 162 (Roston Chase 62, Kieran Powell 14, Kemar Roach 13 not out, Jermaine Blackwood 13, Shai Hope 12, Kyle Mayers 12; Kagiso Rabada 20-9-34-5, Anrich Nortje 3-46, Keshav Maharaj 2-23).

South Africa 322 (Quinton de Kock 141 not out, Aiden Makram 60, Rassie van der Dussen 46, Wiaan Muler 25, Keegan Petersen 19; Jason Holder 4-75, Jayden Seales 3-75, Kemar Roach 2-64).
