Quarter miler Jonathan Jones finished second in a season’s best 45.04 seconds in heat 3 of round one of the men’s 400 metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games tonight.
Jones, competing in lane 9, soared to the front in the early stages and led the pack with 150 metres to go.
A victory was not to be as USA’s Michael Cherry got to the line first in a time of 44.82 seconds, topping the list of qualifiers.
Also among the qualifiers from the Caribbean were Grenada’s Kirani James in 45.09, Christopher Taylor (Jamaica) who was third behind Jones in 45.20, and compatriot Demish Gaye (45.49).
The Bahamian duo of Steven Gardiner and Alonzo Russell clocked 45.05 and 45.51 seconds, respectively, to also advance.
Trinidadian and Tobago had three qualifiers in Deon Lendore (45.14), Machel Cedenio (45.56) and Dwight St Hillaire in a time of 45.41 seconds. (NM/SAT)
