The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is warning the Mia Amor Mottley administration that this is not the time to be taking the electorate lightly and it needs to consult the people about the move to a republic later this year.

The caution came from president Verla De Peiza, who was speaking Monday night at a discussion titled No Referendum! No Republic. We The People Demand To Be Consulted, at the party’s George Street, St Michael headquarters.

She said a conversation must be held about the “fundamental changes that must be made in order to cement a republic for us”.

De Peiza said the DLP did not support the plan because the party did not have the information to say it “represents the will of the people”. She added Barbados was not ready for a republic as there were much larger issues with which to grapple. (GBM)
