More guns than cane, laments judge

Barbados seems to have exchanged sugar cane and the resulting cane fires for firearms and people firing at each other, said Justice Carlisle Greaves.

However, he added, the judiciary is determined to put a stop to the illegal activity.

“There is the prevalence of these firearms in society. We seem to have more firearms in this country now than we have sugar cane. Sugar declined and firearms increasing. Less cane fires and more firing arms. We [will] stop it. We’re determined to stop it. You all will drop these guns or we [will] drop some prison in you,” he declared yesterday.

The judge was speaking as he slapped self-confessed gunman Shane Jabar Joseph with two forthwith fines in the No. 3 Supreme Court.

Joseph, 35, of Chapman Lane, St Michael, was back for sentencing after he had pleaded guilty to having a .22-calibre rifle and rounds of ammunition in 2012. (HLE)
