Government has nominated Governor General Dame Sandra Mason to be the first President of Barbados.

This was announced today by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley during a live national address.

“I met with Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason two months ago and indicated to her that my Government would be proud to have her nominated as the first President of Barbados,” Mottley said.

Mottley said Dame Sandra had already consented to the nomination.

The official endorsement of the Governor General will now preside with both Houses of Parliament – the 30 MPs in the Lower House and the 21 Senators in the Upper House.

When that endorsement is completed, the first president will officially take office on November 30, 2021 – Independence Day.

Dame Sandra is the 8th Governor General of Barbados. Her appointment was announced in 2017 and took effect from January 8, 2018. (CMM)
