Spring Hall ease on cards

Help is on the way for St Lucy farmers whose crops were either wiped out by heavy rainfall or withered due to earlier drought-like conditions.

Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Peter Phillips, made that promise yesterday and he told farmers of the Spring Hall Land Lease Project that plans were in place to construct two major water catchment systems that could store millions of gallons of the precious commodity.

“I am well aware of the challenges you already face in this community with water. This is an area where there is insufficient irrigation infrastructure to supplement supply in the dry season, resulting in critically low water levels at times.

“Furthermore, the area is prone to severe flooding in periods of heavy rainfall. But I wish to assure you that the ministry is actively pursuing construction of two water catchment areas with a total capacity of 132 million gallons to capture the surface run-off,” Phillips said.  (TG)
