Stepped-up surveillance capability at the Bridgetown Port resulted in the interdiction of about $1 million in contraband last month alone.

Disclosing this yesterday, Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey sounded a warning to people behind that sort of criminal activity, vowing they would be caught as the Port continued to improve its detection capabilities.

“We are not playing,” Humphrey said while introducing the Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic Bill 2021 in the House of Assembly.

$20m scanner

He attributed the success in detections to the 88 cameras and the new $20 million scanner in operation at the Port and disclosed the number of cameras would be increased to about 200, giving the Bridgetown Port “the most advanced CCTV system in Barbados”. (GC)
