The former National Assistance Board (NAB) home help workers who protested about not being paid one of their two pensions, were only legally allowed to be paid one from the Government.
However, although Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde suggested that the last administration could have unknowingly permitted them to continue receiving both, she said her ministry was willing to see how best they could accommodate the women.
“As we advance, we will try our best to reach out to them and put systems in place for those who were heavily impacted upon so they can enjoy the quality of life [like] when they were receiving both pensions. But technically they should have been only receiving one, but the reneging of the responsibilities then between 2011 and 2012 and up until recently has created a problem,” Forde said.
In July, a group of pioneers of the Home Help Programme protested at the NAB offices at Country Road, St Michael. They said they had not received their pensions in two months and were surviving by the “Grace of God” and they needed funds to pay their bills. (TG)
