The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) continues to monitor the progress of major Hurricane Sam and two new areas of interest in the tropical Atlantic.

Hurricane Sam continues on a northwestward track with some fluctuations in intensity since last night. This system is currently a Category 3 hurricane as of 11 a.m. on Monday and is expected to pass well north of Barbados on Tuesday and Wednesday.

BMS said that based on this trajectory, this system will not pose any direct threat to the island. This will be the final statement on Hurricane Sam.

With regard to the first area of interest, it is a broad area of low pressure located near 9N 32W at 2 p.m. today.

The second area of interest is located just off the west coast of Africa. Conditions are expected to become conducive for tropical cyclone development as these systems track westward to west-northwestward over the next five days.

Beyond the five-day forecast period, conditions could become unfavourable and there is noticeable spread in the model guidance in terms of the track and intensity of the first area of interest which is currently located near 9N 32W.

The BMS will continue to monitor the progress of both systems over the next few days and highly recommends that the public continues to monitor official sources for daily updates and remain ready throughout the remainder of the hurricane season.

The next update will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday or sooner if conditions warrant. For more information, please visit www.barbadosweather.org. (PR)
