Barbados has lost one of its well-known educators, Charles Washington Pilgrim.
The former principal of Combermere School passed away yesterday after a sudden illness. He was 91.
“It’s really difficult to describe how much “Charlie” meant to me and my brother (David). He was extremely instrumental in our development, and was always extremely good with small children,” grief-stricken son, prominent Queen’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim, told the Sunday Sun.
“From the time we were tiny he formed a very tight bond with both of us, playing with us from morning till night. We would always look forward to his return home from Combermere, and we would follow him about anywhere, including to Combermere,” he recounted.
“He then became a different kind of father when we hit our teenaged years. When my brother decided to become a graphic artist, my dad fully supported him and went out with him to see him settle in. When we were both involved in theatre, he always encouraged and supported us. He was certainly my harshest critic on the stage. He would always tell me when I was good, and bad.” (BA)
