Atherley still uneasy about Charter

The absence of the reference to a sovereign God in the Charter of Barbados continues to raise alarm bells among the Christian community, including Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley.

He held a media conference yesterday in the Committee Room of Parliament, Worthing Corporate Centre, Christ Church, alongside members of Family-Faith-Freedom Barbados, Pastor Paul Leacock and attorney Corey Beckles.

He said he was sceptical whether the Charter would not influence law.

“The Opposition has found much convergence between ourselves and hundreds of church leaders. Of particular concern is the actual place of the charter as we move to becoming a republic.

“Government insisted it has no legal weight yet it has been elevated to Parliament in resolution and will go before her Excellency the Governor General to read as one of her first duties as President,” he said. (CA)
