Call for laws to protect the elderly

Too many elderly people are being financially abused and forced to live with family members without their permission, laments retired social worker George Griffith.

As such, he is calling for the drafting of legislation specifically to address the protection of the elderly.

“We have specific legislation to protect animals but none specifically to protect senior citizens. I guess you’d have to rely on the Offences Against The Person Act, but there is no specific legislation that speaks to the abuse of senior citizens physically, sexually, financially and emotionally.

“So we are going to be lobbying to make sure the law makes provision for that, because the persons who are observed abusing senior citizens will give the impression that the person is not clear in their head and they cannot say what is happening to them,” Griffith said. (TG)
