Some of the householders displaced by Hurricane Elsa in July are one step closer to receiving new Chinese-made prefabricated houses from Government.
Minister of Housing and Lands Dr William Duguid gave that update on Tuesday while speaking at Six Roads Industrial Park in St Philip after the parts for the East West Building Solutions houses arrived in containers.
Duguid recalled that Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley set Christmas as the target for the completion of the project, however, he acknowledged that there were some delays.
“The Prime Minister said Christmas and we are working very hard to get as many done as we can, but realistically we know these things take time.
“We got put back by a storm in China, there were difficulties coming out of Jamaica but we are constantly working to get as many houses done,” he said.
The storage containers are also Government property and Duguid explained that through support from other ministries, the area will be used as a storage facility.
“This project is a collaboration between the Barbados Investment & Development Corporation which gave the land, the Airport provided the material to pave this area, the National Housing Corporation provided the designs and the Ministry of Finance and Housing provided the funding to make this project possible, Duguid added.
The $29 million controversial housing project will facilitate people who were displaced following Hurricane Elsa in July and the “freak” storm in June. (TG)
