Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Indar Weir is projecting an early start to next year’s sugar crop.

He told the House of Assembly yesterday that weather permitting, harvesting of the canes could begin in mid-February, which would be “a record start after many decades”.

The announcement came during discussion on a $51.6 million resolution to shore up the 2021-2022 Estimates.

He was seeking $14.4 million for the ministry, of which $160 000 was needed to supplement its budget for the “provision of support for Hurricane Elsa”, more than $8 million to pay sugar cane farmers and $5.3 million for two programmes being executed through the Barbados Agricultural Management Company, including repairs to Portvale Sugar Factory.
