NUPW posts filled

After months of wrangling over the top position at the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Richard Green has been appointed general secretary.

The filling of the post was announced by president Kimberley Agard yesterday in a press statement, which also confirmed Wayne Walrond in the position of deputy general secretary.

Walrond had acted in the top post recently.

Green has been with the organisation for 28 years and was selected after applicants were interviewed.

The NUPW was the focus of a very public spat last year in which it emerged that there was a plan afoot to restructure the organisation and create the post of secretary general.

That position, it was alleged, was to be filled by the then president Akanni McDowall, who held that position for six years.

However, what ensued was internal fighting, claims of political interference, special general meetings, stalled elections and court action.

When it was all over McDowall withdrew from the elections even though he got the court’s go-ahead.

In the statement yesterday Agard said the National Council had a duty to make appointments and initiated the process to do so.

“The NUPW as an organisation will continue on its path of resurgence and growth and anticipates that these appointments will facilitate the continued journey of success and achievements in representing, defending and protecting the interests of its members,” Agard said. (AC)
