Call to landlords

With 249 people displaced by Hurricane Elsa last year and living in temporary shelters, the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs has sent out an appeal to landlords for houses and apartments to rent.

Yesterday’s notice called on owners of fully furnished rental apartments or houses to assist with accommodating people whose homes were damaged during the passage of Elsa last July 2. It stated the accommodation would be temporary until repairs to the homes of those displaced were completed.

Corey Lane, Parliamentary Secretary in the ministry, told the DAILY NATION there were temporary locations such as the Barbados Workers’ Union’s Labour College at Mangrove, St Philip, from where they were forced to relocate some of the displaced victims because the property has been taken over by the Ministry of Health.

Some of the hurricane victims are being sheltered at Codrington College, St John, and the Nazarene Church and Sterling Children’s Home in St Philip, among others. (MB)
