Barbadians will soon have a digital national identification card that will serve a wide range of purposes.

The digital National Trident ID card, in which the Barbados driver’s license will be embedded, is coming to replace the current ID card that has been in existence since 1969.

New Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Davidson Ishmael, in his maiden speech in the House of Assembly on Monday morning, said the new ID would be a single source of identification, approved by Government and the financial services sector.

It is further planned to make the design an acceptable ID for international travel.

Update on driver’s licences

Meanwhile Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw has assured Barbadians still awaiting their driver’s licence cards that every effort is being made to deliver those that have already been printed.

She said the Licensing Authority was still in possession of several licences despite having utilised the services of the General Post Office to assist in the delivery to homes for people who paid online.

Bradshaw said of 15 769 licences sent to the General Post Office for delivery, 9 640 had to date been delivered, leaving 5 221 still to be distributed.

Bradshaw and Ishmael were both speaking during debate on the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2022. (GC)
