Gems move up rankings

Barbados’ senior netball team, the Bajan Gems, will take to the court at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July as the official 12th ranked team in the world.

That status was achieved in the latest international rankings which saw the Gems leapfrogging Zimbabwe to claim the 12th spot after being stuck on 13th for the past two years. That situation was rather dicey since the Gems were on a rating of 81 with Cook Islands who were ranked 14th.

Although Zimbabwe are no longer a member of the Commonwealth and are not eligible to participate at the Games, the Gems were fearful of Cook Islands getting in some matches and clinching the 12th spot.

The Commonwealth finals positions were announced in January. (KB)
