A COVID-19 Monitoring Unit officer said she and a colleague asked proprietors of Aaron’s Fruit and Vegetable Mini Mart to close their doors, and maintained she was not misleading the court with her testimony.

Emma Ann Abrahim and Churaman Veerandra, of the corner of Pinfold and Roebuck Streets, St Michael, were back before the District “C” Magistrates’ Court last week after pleading not guilty to contravening Paragraph (3) Subparagraph (1) of the Emergency Management COVID-19 (Curfew) (No.3) Directive, 2021, in that they being the operators of a non-essential service, were not permitted to open, and failed to remain closed on February 4, 2021.

Officer Tonya Cadogan recalled the entrance to the business was opened, goods were on display and people were conducting business on the day in question, but could not recall how many people were there. However, she said she saw Abrahim sitting in the back of the store and Veerandra closer to the front.

She said her colleague, Ricky Edwards, told the couple the business was not allowed to be open, but Veerandra said he wanted to sell some stock that was there and didn’t not want them to go off, adding he could not get to the supermarket to sell them. (HLE)
