General secretary of the Unity Workers Union, Caswell Franklyn, is claiming that Government has included “safe zones” in the recently published Emergency Management (COVID-19) (No.4) Directive, 2022.

Under Section 18 of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) Order, 2022, which came into effect last Thursday and expires on April 7, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley may, on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, issue a directive designating any area, business or establishment, to which only people who comply with the provisions of the directive, may go or transact business.

Fine $50 000

The directive further states that an area, business or establishment designated by the Prime Minister, pursuant to Subsection (1), shall be known as a safe zone, and a person failing to comply with the directive is guilty of an offence and liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of $50 000, imprisonment for a year, or both.

“You only find out you are breaking a rule when you broke it. Things like these should be publicised and given to the public even before they are made. But the Prime Minister, relying on what they call emergency regulations, and instituting these directives, and nobody is doing anything about it,” Franklyn told the DAILY NATION yesterday. (RA)
