$1.4m to host Carifta Games
The region’s most prestigious junior track and field event is costing Jamaica an estimated BDS$1.4 million to stage, with increased expenditure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Organisers of the CARIFTA Games were forced to ramp up health measures and protocols to protect athletes and officials at the meet in Kingston over the Easter weekend.
And the local organising committee is confident the Games will be a success despite a change from its traditional format because of safety concerns regarding the novel coronavirus.
“The total of hosting CARIFTA right now is about US$700 000 and that would include accommodation and the special equipment that is required for the broadcasting, presentations and COVID-19 of course as this is an international event. We know the pandemic is still with us and we have worked harder than normal on ensuring everyone is safe,” chairman Mike Fennell told NATION SPORT during an interview. (AG-B)
