Move to get more men tested

The Heart and Stroke Foundation will soon be rolling out a project to get men to submit to blood pressure testing in an area where most men are likely to frequent.

Dr Kenneth Connell, president of the Foundation and Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Cave Hill Campus, said the initiative would be a barbershop project.

“Men don’t usually go out to get screened. It is a huge challenge, and so in 2022 the message has got to be [that] men need to use every opportunity. Don’t just say go to the doctor to have your blood pressure done; have your blood pressure done anywhere.

“We hope in Barbados to roll out pretty soon a barbershop project because men go to barbers quite a lot. And you can have your blood pressure checked in the barber chair,” he said, adding that the aim was to see the health environment outside of a hospital or doctor’s office.

Connell made the comments yesterday at Ilaro Court where Attorney General Dale Marshall submitted to a blood pressure check as part of the activities by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Cave Hill Campus to commemorate May Measurement Month. (MB)
