Rain on Thursday injected new intrigue into the final round of the West Indies Championship by forcing a complete abandonment of the second day in all matches in Trinidad.
Not a ball was bowled at any venue as the adverse weather across the island kept players off the field at Diego Martin Sporting Complex, Queen’s Park Oval, and Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA).
Rain is also in the forecast for the two remaining days of the round with brief showers anticipated on Friday and occasional showers on Saturday.
Leeward Islands Hurricanes will be keeping anxious watch on the skies at the BLCA, after entering the final round on 65.4 points, less than two points behind holders and leaders Barbados Pride, on 67.
Pride dominated the opening day of their contest against Windward Islands Volcanoes at Diego Martin Sporting Complex, dismissing their opponents for 203 and then racing to 109 for one at the close.
The Kraigg Brathwaite-led side, however, will want to wrap up an outright win to avoid any surprises.
Hurricanes were, however, frustrated by Jamaica Scorpions on the first day, with Paul Palmer hitting a career-best 143 not out to help his side recover from 61 for five and reach 302 all out at the close.
With the window for an outright win swiftly closing, Hurricanes will be hoping for sunny skies on the remaining days to keep pressure on Pride.
Hosts Trinidad & Tobago Red Force resumes from 203 for nine against third-placed Guyana Harpy Eagles in the other game at Queen’s Park Oval, with neither team in serious contention for the title.
