Minister of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith joined with the rest of the Barbadian public in congratulating Sada Williams on her historic bronze medal finish in the women’s 400 metres final on Friday at the World Athletics Championships in the United States.

Additionally, Griffth revealed advanced plans for the redesign and reconstruction of the National Stadium, which has been sitting in ruin for some time.

This year’s Championships in Eugene, Oregon, held under the motto Feel The Glory, saw Bajans witness and feel Williams’ glory around 10:19 p.m. local time on Friday.

The 24-year-old stormed to a national record and personal best of 49.75 seconds, becoming Barbados’ first female medallist in the history of the Championships.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo, of The Bahamas, clocked a world leading 49.11 seconds to capture the gold medal and become World champion for the first time in her career. Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic was second in 49.6 seconds to complete a Caribbean sweep of the medals.

In the men’s 400m final, Williams’ teammate Jonathan Jones put up a valiant effort, but faded over the last 200 to finish eighth in 46.13 seconds. (NM)
