Changes coming for Open Campus

Major changes, including the “right-sizing” of staff, are in the works for the financially troubled Open Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Principal and pro vice-chancellor Dr Francis Severin told the Weekend Nation yesterday that consultants have been engaged to determine the optimal resources needed for the soon to be rebranded entity.

Hinting that jobs could be a casualty, he said it simply could not be business as usual.

Last month, the Sunday Sun reported that some staff continued to suffer financially, with their salaries being paid late every month.

At a town hall meeting in May, management informed staff they could not guarantee on-time payments, as the Open Campus was struggling financially. The Government of Barbados bailed out the institution last December by assisting with the payment of salaries, while reports indicate that sister campuses have been funding salaries over the past few months.
